An Interview.
Do you have a dream you’re pursuing?
I do.
If you’ve spent any time on my Twitter, you might have noticed that I’m obsessed with music. I’m an electronic producer, and I spend untold amounts of time in the studio crafting the perfect beat. It’s an addictive business, but there are worse fates. (And if bleeps and bloops isn’t your style, don’t fret — I still love to sing Patsy Cline. And when I sing Patsy Cline, people fall in love.)
I keep a strict schedule and work as diligently as possible, lest I get too distracted running around the city making eyes at cuties and otherwise frittering my life away. My gorgeous Bushwick studio is my temple. I can be a bit secretive and protective when it comes to my music — just know that it’s part of my reverence for the craft.
I draw influence from trip-hop, old school crooners, industrial music, and opera. You can check out some of my playlists here — hardly exhaustive, but definitely enough to soundtrack a few hot dates ;)
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?
August 2011, somewhere near Selinunte, Sicily. I was traveling with an archaeological dig, and after a long drive on a cramped, air condition-less bus from Syracuse, the group was cranky and hungry. Miraculously, a little restaurant on the beachfront was able to host our large group on the patio while a wedding party went on inside.
They brought out plates seemingly at random, in the most abundant and delightful chaos: white sardines, fresh-caught mussels in garlic, linguine with octopus, early season tomatoes with balsamic, crudo upon crudo upon crudo. Homemade bread with butter. Amalfi lemon gelato for dessert. Many more things I’ve long forgotten — the wine jugs were moving as haphazardly as the plates — but the view of the sunset and the freshness of the seafood will stay with me forever.
What do you like but are kind of embarrassed to admit?
I’d take milk chocolate over dark any day.
(This applies to truffles or chocolate bars rather than, say, chocolate within the context of a larger dessert, but still…controversial. And need-to-know.)
What is expensive but totally worth it?
Healthy food on the go. Sure, $17 on a salad may blow my mind, but I’m a busy girl and if I can’t plan ahead, I’ll pay for convenience every time.
Great speakers. Hint: there are no great Bluetooth speakers.
Mental health. I think everyone stands to benefit from therapy. It can be an invaluable asset to happiness and success. (And even though I’ve been known to stand in for one, a real therapist I surely ain’t.)
Well-made shoes. Shoes say it all. They make the outfit. They bear the entire weight of your body and truth of your circumstance. You could even say my clothing motto is “second-hand designer clothes, brand new designer shoes.”
Living in New York City. Not sure if I can ever again live anywhere else.
Art.
What would your perfect vacation morning look like?
After an indulgent nine hours of deep sleep, I wake up to the sound of the ocean early enough to catch the misty morning light. I drink a cup of tea — sticky rice pu’er — while sitting on the porch, watching the tide roll in and reading Lispector. I play with some melody ideas on a creaky but well-tuned upright piano until I’m hungry enough to bike to a cute café for breakfast. WiFi and cell phones simply don’t exist until noon.
